Multiple Oral Dose (Antibiotic)
RN is a 19 year old factory worker who developed acute bronchitis during a community outbreak of pertussis. He was started on a course of a macrolide antibiotic, 250mg twice a day.
Case Narrative
The macrolide antibiotic is reasonably well absorbed when taken orally. It has an elimination half-life of about 4-6 hours.
Therapeutic efficacy of the antibiotic is usually observed at trough concentrations above 0.3 mg/L. Peak concentrations above 1 mg/L appear to be associated with significant prolongation of the QTc interval, with correspondingly increased risk of cardiac arrhythmias.
